Dear Subscriber,

The Coordination and Support Action (CSA) BrainHealth is the preparatory phase for the European Partnership for Brain Health. The project started on November 1st, 2023 with a runtime of 24 months. Funded by the European Commission, it builds the umbrella for 21 participants from 11 countries.

With the second issue of the CSA BrainHealth’s newsletter, we would like to look back at the past six months, which were marked by significant progress for the project, such as the publication of the draft proposal for the European Partnership for Brain Health and the joint Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, crucial stakeholder engagement through the SRIA Public Consultation, and participation in key events.

SRIA

Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda

On October 15th, 2024, the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) BrainHealth was published on the CSA BrainHealth website after formal adoption by the Project Steering Committee.

The writing of the SRIA was led by INSERM and ANR with contributions from DLR, EBC, CNRS, EBRAINS, AEI, ZonMw and all CSA partners as well as from the European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities (EASSH) and complemented in a consultation process with the research community, potential funders, the European Commission and other relevant stakeholder groups, including patients and industry. The SRIA outlines the future priorities and innovation goals for advancing brain health research across Europe.

Draft proposal

Draft Proposal for an European Partnership for Brain Health

On September 20th, 2024, the proposal draft for the European Partnership for Brain Health was published by the European Commission. This draft proposal is a joint effort by the CSA BrainHealth writing group (ANR, INSERM, EBC, EBRAINS, ZonMW), led by the Coordinator DLR, incorporating inputs and information from all CSA BrainHealth partners and the European Commission. This draft will be the basis to elaborate the full proposal for the European Partnership for Brain Health.

On November 13th, 2024, the CSA BrainHealth Coordinator, Dr. Ulrike Bußhoff, took part in a panel discussion titled “Accelerating Brain Research and Innovation in Europe and Globally” at the 2024 Brain Innovation Days. This panel discussion brought together policymakers, scientists, and key industry players to present the current advances, drivers and barriers in the brain research and innovation space.

Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU Event, 9-10 December 2024, Budapest

The CSA BrainHealth was pleased to participate in the “Towards a Strengthened European Cooperation in Brain Health Research” Conference, hosted by the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in Budapest. This important event brought together diverse stakeholders to maximise the societal impact of brain health research. It featured visits to prestigious research facilities at the HUN-REN Institute of Experimental Medicine and Semmelweis University, offering participants a firsthand look at advancements in brain health research. Interactive sessions and panel discussions explored the societal impacts of neuroscience, the challenges researchers are facing, and effective strategies for enhancing European collaboration.

Brainstorming the Future of Brain Health

PolSCA of the Polish Academy of Science, Helmholtz and SwissCore, 12 November 2024, Brussels

Organized by the Polish Science Contact Agency “PolSCA” of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Brussels, Helmholtz Association & SwissCore, the event aimed to accelerate scientific collaboration, innovation and impactful solutions in brain health. Dr. Ulrike Bußhoff, Coordinator of the CSA BrainHealth, presented the way towards the European Partnership for Brain Health and its expected impacts, followed by a panel discussion with Kasia Jurczak, Dr. Cezary Mazurek, Prof. Katrin Amunts & Prof. Indrit Bègue.

Draft proposal

FENS Forum 2024, 25-29 June 2024, Vienna

At the 2024 FENS Forum, the European Brain Council’s Networking Reception, “Enhancing Global Partnerships in Brain Research,” provided an opportunity to further collaboration between global stakeholders. Suzanne Dickson (EBC) opened the session, followed by an engaging panel discussion with key stakeholders like George Barreto (International Brain Research Organization (IBRO)), Ulrike Busshoff (Coordination & Support Action BrainHealth), John Ngai (NIH Brain Initiative), and Stephanie Kramer (EBC), focusing on uniting the brain research community worldwide.

Draft proposal

10th Congress of the European Academy of Neurology, 29 June – 2 July 2024, Helsinki

During the 10th Congress of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), the CSA BrainHealth was featured in an EAN TV Studio between Astri Arnesen (European Federation of Neurological Associations), and Claudio Lino Bassetti (EBC, European Academy of Neurology & SFCNS Swiss Brain Health Plan) and Stephanie Kramer (EBC). The discussion revolved around brain health plans and ongoing policy efforts for brain health at the national, European and global levels. Furthermore, Kristien Aarts (EBC), presented the Coordination & Support Action BrainHealth, currently underway to prepare for the European Brain Health Partnership.

37th Congress of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, 24 September 2024, Milano

The CSA BrainHealth was pleased to join a session organised by EBC at the 2024 European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) Congress titled “Towards the Brain Health Partnership”. The session revolved around the essential role played by transnational collaboration and alignment in achieving global impact in brain health, research & innovation. This very much aligns with the CSA BrainHealth work on building synergies with relevant global brain health initiatives, as part of its Work Package on Global Outreach.

Science Summit, New York City: Brain Days @80th United Nations General Assembly

Held in parallel with the United Nations High-Level Conference on Non-Communicable Diseases, the Global Brain Coalition will host a two-days high-level event as part of the Science Summit of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York City. The CSA BrainHealth will take part in the event to showcase the work done in paving the way towards an EU Partnership for Brain Health, structuring research priorities, and connecting with relevant international partners..
